As a manufacturing method that realizes high controllability while improving the productivity of carbon nanotubes while being a simple means, a metal catalyst is present in the reaction chamber in a halogen-free state, and a carbon source is used as a raw material on the metal catalyst. A method for producing carbon nanotubes, wherein a halogen-containing substance is present in the reaction chamber when the carbon nanotubes are formed, and the molar ratio of the halogen-containing substance to the carbon source is 0.2 or less. A method for producing carbon nanotubes is provided.
