Aquaporin proteins are effective for inducing a protective immune response against other tick species in non-bovine animals. the aquaporin protein r. microplus is antigenic and may be administered as a protein vaccine, or alternatively, the nucleic acid construct may be used as a DNA vaccine. induction of the immune response considerably reduces or eliminates the infestation of non-bovine animals treated by ticks other than the bovine tick, particularly the red dog tick, rhipicephalus sanguineus. In addition, since ticks are vectors of a variety of pathogens, the reduction in vaccine incidence of tick infestation can simultaneously reduce the incidence of diseases caused by these pathogens in susceptible animals.
