The present invention is a process for the dehydration of an alcohol for the preparation of a corresponding olefin comprising: (a) providing a composition (a) comprising at least one alcohol containing at least 2 carbon atoms, optionally water, optionally an inert component in a dehydration unit, (b) contacting the composition (a) with an acid catalyst in a reaction zone of said dehydration unit under conditions effective to dehydrate at least a part of the alcohol to obtain an olefin. (c) recovering from said effluent dehydration unit (b) comprising: - at least one olefin, - water, - unwanted by-products including aldehydes and light products, - optionally unconverted alcohol (s) optionally the inert component, wherein said feeding step (a) comprises the addition of an effective amount of one or more compounds. sulfur containing salts capable of reducing unwanted by-products compared to not introducing such sulfur containing compound. The component introduced in step (a) may be chosen from the group consisting of thiols, sulfides, disulfides.
