In order to characterize the spatio-temporal dynamics of an excitable deformation medium (1), an elastic model of the medium is defined. The medium is imaged at consecutive points in time to obtain a series of images. the displacements of middle structures (1) between series images are determined. a dynamics description of a temporal development of spatial deformations of a predefined elastic means model (1) is adapted to correspond to the displacements of the structures; and the temporal developments of deformation pattern rate in the medium (1) are identified from the dynamics description.
