a method of hydraulically fracturing an underground formation penetrated by an exploration well comprises: providing a diversion fluid comprising a carrier fluid, a first superabsorbent polymer and a second superabsorbent polymer, the second superabsorbent polymer of a shape or composition; or a combination thereof other than that of the first superabsorbent polymer; inject the diversion fluid into the underground formation; and injecting a fracturing fluid into the formation after injecting the bypass fluid. A viscosity modifying agent may be present in the bypass fluid. Superabsorbent polymers can also be used to develop a temporary filtration residue on the forming face to reduce or eliminate fluid leakage from the exploration well.
