These are non-propagating transgenic microalgae expressing at least one heterologous RNA molecule. non-propagating transgenic microalgae expressing RNAi are used for oral administration of the RNA molecule to a target organism in its intact and functional form. The heterologous RNA molecule present within the microalgae is characterized by being biologically active, having at least one specific effect on the microalgae-consuming organism or on a pathogen of the microalgae. In particular, non-propagating transgenic microalgae are used as agents for biological control of animal and plant pests.
