A method of preparing a catalyst for hydroisomerization of C4-C7 alkanes based on mordenite, a catalyst with higher activity, due to access to the reaction centres without reducing the number of acidic reaction centres, obtainable in this manner, and a method of hydroisomerization of alkanes on this catalyst. The method of preparing a catalyst for hydroisomerization of C4-C7 alkanes comprises the following steps:- fluoridation of mordenite by a water-soluble fluoride or hydrofluoric acid,- the subsequent desilication of mordenite by alkaline leaching in order to produce modified mordenite,- ion exchange of sodium atoms with protons in a solution containing Hor NH4ions and possible subsequent calcination in order to form the H-forms of modified mordenite,- by applying at least one metal selected from the group consisting of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium and platinum to the modified mordenite in the NH4+- or H-form.
