A detection system for monitoring the position of the pipeline located in the bottom of the water mass and passing along a given route; the system (1) contains a device (3; 103), which is arranged to move in the direction (D) of movement and along a given route and contains a support (9; 109), which is extended generally perpendicular to the direction of movement (D), a number of sources (10) of acoustic waves, which are mounted on a support (9; 109) and made with the possibility of propagation of acoustic waves through the water mass (6) and the bottom (5) of the water mass (6), and a number of receivers (11) acoustic waves that are located along the support (9; 109) and are made with the quality of reception of reflected acoustic waves and the emission of signals (SR) of reception associated with reflected acoustic waves; and a processing unit (12) comprising a data acquisition unit (14), which is configured to receive externally at least one data selected from a group of known or expected data containing a known cross section (D1) of the pipe (4), an expected value the height (H) of the pipeline trench, the known shape of the pipeline (4), the expected bathymetric profile of the bottom (5) of the water mass (6) and the expected position value (P) of the pipeline (4); wherein the processing unit (12) is configured to calculate the parameter (H) associated with the position (P) of the pipeline (4) in the bottom (5) of the water mass (6), based on the reception signals (SR) and at least one data selectable from a group of data.
