The invention relates to the field of identification, characterization and segregation of gemstones using a method and apparatus. The method comprises the steps of exposing one or more gemstones to radiation in the range of 200 to 450 nm and observing the resultant luminescence and/or phosphorescence emitted from the said irradiated gemstones and classifying the gemstone on the basis of the said resultant luminescence and/or phosphorescence. The apparatus comprises a holding means for holding one or more gemstones and one or more radiation sources for irradiating the said gemstones, an imaging means to observe the luminescence and/or phosphorescence emitted from the said irradiated gemstones and classifying the gemstone on the basis of the said resultant luminescence and/or phosphorescence.
