The present invention relates to acetabular cup implant and a method for additive manufacturing of the same based on geodesical dome approach with continuous radially-graded porosity. The method involves adopting and applying the concepts of geodesic dome, in the domain of orthopaedic implant design and preparation of porous structures with controlled and continuous variation by additive manufacturing which ensures the radial variation of properties. The invention thus provides acetabular component of hip implants, wherein the manufactured implant has radially distributed porosity, which can be designed to match the mechanical properties of the bone that it replaces. The geodesic dome is generated by assembling a number of tapered triangular pyramid shaped units to generate the hemispherical shell of the acetabular cup, and such units ensure the radial distribution of the porosity gradient, to control the gradual changes in properties,using any available CAD tool, imparting flexibility of design compatible with additive manufacturing.
