A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF 5-ARYLIDENE BARBITURIC ACID AND THIOBARBITURIC ACID DERIVATIVES

The present invention is related to an improved process for the preparation of 5-arylidene barbituric acid and thiobarbituric acid derivatives of Formula (I). The process according to present invention is operationally simple and suitable for industrial application, which avoids hazardous chemicals and eliminates the use of volatile organic solvents. The process uses water as reaction medium in combination with ionic compound such as sodium chloride and by conducting the reaction in a closed vessel. The invention also leads to the preparation of practically pure products of Formula (I), in high yields.
