Abstract: The present investigation was carried out to evaluate the protective effect of Ocimum sanctum nanosuspension against the lead intoxicated brain, heart, liver and kidney in Wistar albino rats. The study was designed to compare the effect of Ocimum sanctum alone and its nanosuspension on lead intoxicated rats for 4 weeks. The rats were sacrificed after 4 weeks of study period. Blood was also drawn by cardiac puncture and preserved in heparinized vials at 4 °C for estimation of delta-aminoievulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity and the brain, heart, liver, and kidney were isolated on ice for further analysis. The results showed that Ocimum sanctum and its formulations significant elevation of the serum ALAD activity and tissue specific recovery of antioxidant enzymes (SOD & CAT), oxidative stress parameters (PCO & MDA) and glutathione system (GSH, GPx and GST) upon concomitant administration of Lead. Among all the treatment groups the nanosuspension showed better protective activity compare with the Ocimum sanctum alone in lead intoxication. Overall, our results indicate that the Ocimum sanctum nanosuspension could be an effective strategy for lead-induced oxidative stress.
