The present invention proposes a method to optimize convergence and minimize Shortest Path First (SPF) calculation on router Identity (Id) change. Accordingly, the present invention provides a solution to reduce flooding and Shortest Path First (SPF) calculation during router Identity (Id) change on a stable network. A proper negotiation is performed to know willingness of the neighboring routers to support optimized convergence on router Id change. The method involves sending a hello packet by a router to neighboring routers with an extra bit set in an option field of the hello packet when the router Id changes.[IN-CHE-2008-00444A]
