Disclosed are a background application program control method, device and terminal device, the method comprising: establishing a program list according to application programs running in an operation system; traversing identifiers in the program list; the traversed identifiers being current identifiers, determining whether an application program corresponding to a current identifier is a background application program; when an application corresponding to a current identifier is a background application, determining whether said identifier is stored within a preset white list, and also whether the number of identifiers in the program list corresponding to application programs which are background applications exceeds a preset threshold; when the number of current identifiers stored in the white list exceeds a preset threshold, selecting in the program list one identifier corresponding to an application program which is a background application, and closing the application corresponding to the selected identifier; and when a current identifier is not stored in the white list and the number exceeds the preset threshold, closing the application corresponding to the current identifier. The solution better controls background application programs.
