The invention pertains to the field of ethnopharmacology which is focused on oral health and is related to antimicrobial agents and more particularly to extracts of plants that reduce or inhibit the growth or survival of microorganism. Since tooth decay is one of the most common oral diseases present in patients with different types of predisposing factors, it is considered an important health problem, therefore the present invention being related to the antimicrobial activity of a methanol extract obtained from the leaves of the Ruta chalepensis plant. This extract substantially inhibits the growth of the cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans, in a liquid and solid medium, in an environment optimum for the growth thereof.
