The method involves braking an elevator stopping device and holding an elevator car (2). The elevator stopping device (11) comprises number of brake units (12), which is used in requirement with brake path in engagement. An effective coefficient of friction of the brake unit, produced while pressing the brake plate on the brake path, is determined. An independent claim is also included for an initiation device.
