The current invention is directed to a cistern assembly (10) for a flush toilet where the cistern assembly (10) includes a cistern housing (12) including a cistern lid and a cistern base, a cistern member (11) pivotally attached within the cistern housing (12), and an actuator means associated with the cistern member (11) to pivot the cistern member (11) relative to the cistern housing (12) to discharge the stored water. The cistern member (11) has a base wall (14) that forms a chamber (13) to store the water and a passageway (15, 16) to discharge the water from the chamber (13), the passageway (15, 16) has an internal inlet (24) and a cistern outlet (26, 27) and is shaped to siphon water through the passageway (15, 16). The internal inlet (24) is positioned substantially on or adjacent to the pivot vertical axis (29) of the cistern member (11) when the cistern member (11) is in one of the pivoted positions. The actuator means can tilt the cistern member (11) to actuate discharge of water through the passageway (15, 16) so that when the cistern member (11) is pivoted and the passageway (15, 16) is moved below the water level of the stored water of the chamber (13), the water is drawn through the passageway (15, 16) to the cistern outlet (26, 27) until air within the chamber (13) enters the passageway (15, 16) preventing further water from being drawn into the passageway (15, 16).
