An optical device for expanding an input light in two dimensions on an augmented reality screen, comprising: a waveguide (12); a diffractive optical input element configured to couple input light to the waveguide; and two diffractive optical elements (17; H1; H2) completely superimposed over each other on or on the waveguide, in which each of the two diffractive optical elements is configured to receive light from the input diffractive optical element and couple it to the other diffractive optical element that can then act as an output diffractive optical element that provides outwardly coupled orders to a viewer.
