A system for producing edible waste, the system comprising: (a) one or more operating units to receive and physically treat a feed load, where at least one of the one or more operating units is an operating unit reducing the recalcitrance comprising a first irradiation unit to irradiate the feed load to reduce recalcitrance; (b) one or more cooking devices to process the feed load before fermentation; (c) a bioprocessing unit for fermentation, where the bioprocessing unit uses one or more antibiotics; (d) an evaporator / dryer operating unit; and (e) a second irradiation unit to irradiate an edible residue.
