A chin preparation process in which a hydrogenation reaction by transfer is carried out in a liquid medium containing isopulegol, a ruthenium precursor and a phenol derivative in which the phenol derivative has one of the formulas ** Formula ** in which R1, R2, R3, R4 are independently hydrogen, alkyls, or hydroxy, or R3, R4 together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached form a linked aromatic ring; R5a is hydrogen, alkyl, or hydroxy; R6, R7, R8, R9 are independently hydrogen or alkyl, or R6, R7 together with the carbon atoms to which they are attached form a linked aromatic ring; R10 is hydrogen or hydroxy, and X is a chemical bond; alkylene optionally substituted by 1, 2 or 3 substituents that are independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl and OH; arylene optionally substituted by 1, 2, 3 substituents that are independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkoxy and OH; -O-, or -S-; and in which the ruthenium precursor does not possess nitrogen or phosphorus donor ligands.
