Process of treating a piece of nitride / nitrocarbon steel, according to which: - at least one part of the piece is subjected to a first stage according to which at least one laser beam is displaced according to at least one pass on said part, until the partial or total transformation of the surface layer of the part considered and the modification of the distribution of the nitrogen concentration in the diffusion zone, - the part at least treated by laser is subjected to transform the surface layer, to a second stage according to which at least one laser beam is displaced along at least one pass on said part to allow the concentration of nitrogen in the underlying diffusion layer to be decreased.
