A lithium-sulfur multiple electrode cell or battery comprising: (a) at least one negative electrode made of metallic lithium, lithium alloys, or lithium absorbing materials; (b) at least first and second positive electrodes or groups of positive electrodes, in which case at least one of the positive electrodes contains sulfur or inorganic, organic polymeric, electrochemically active sulfur-based compounds and the first and second electrodes positive or groups of electrodes are different from each other; and (c) an electrolyte that is a solution of one or more salts in one or more solvents arranged between the negative and positive electrodes; (d) in which case the first positive electrode or a group of positive electrodes is configured to charge and the second positive electrode or a group of positive electrodes is configured to discharge.
