A method for determining a glycemic condition in a subject, the method comprising: chemically oxidizing a saliva sample from the subject, thereby oxidizing one or more glycoproteins in the saliva sample to generate one or more oxidation products, wherein or glycoproteins comprising sialic acid and fucose, and wherein the or the oxidation products comprise one or more aldehydes; and quantifying or aldehydes in the sample oxidized saliva, in which a significant increase in an amount of or aldehydes relative to a normal reference range indicates that the subject has diabetes or prediabetes.
