PREVENTION OF SAFETY HAZARDS DUE TO LEAKAGE CURRENT

Medical apparatus includes an electrical powersupply, which is configured for connection to anelectrical medical device that is coupled to a body of apatient. In oneembodiment, the apparatus includesalternating current (AC) lines that include a groundline. A switch is coupled to connect and disconnect theAC lines from an AC power source. A current sensor iscoupled to sense a current flowing in the ground line andto actuate the switch to disconnect the AC lines when thecurrent exceeds a predetermined threshold. In anotherembodiment, a plurality of electrocardiogram (ECG) leads,including a common lead, are coupled to the body of thepatient. An auxiliarycurrent sensor is coupled tomonitor a current flowing through the common lead and toactuate the switch to disconnect the power connectionwhen the current exceeds a predetermined limit.
