The invention provides a process for producing acarboxyl-containing polymer composition that allows thepossibility of obtaining a carboxyl-containing polymercomposition which exhibits excellent dispersibility inwater or the like, has a viscosity increasing to a lowerdegree compared to the viscosity of a neutralized viscousliquid using an additive-free carboxyl-containing polymer,and has a high degree of transparency in a neutralizedviscous liquid thereof. A carboxyl-containing polymercomposition is obtained by polymerizing a monomercontaining an a,p-unsaturated carboxylic acid as a maincomponent in a presence of a polyol (iso)stearic acidester. A polyol in the polyol (iso)stearic acid ester isa polyol selected from a specific group, and the polyol(iso)stearic acid ester is used in the polymerization inan amount of 0.2 to 7 parts by mass based on 100 parts bymass of the .alpha., beta. -unsaturated carboxylic acid.
