A method of establishing a runway approach procedure for an aircraft at aselectedrunway, comprises, for obstacles in the final approach segment of theflightpath and havingobstacle range values greater than the datum range, calculating a missedapproach surfaceheight at a projected intersection of a missed approach surface with adescending verticalerror budget surface and a corresponding Distance to Height of Missed ApproachSurfacefrom the runway (DHMAS). For obstacles in the final approach segment andhaving obstaclerange values less than the datum range, a missed approach surface height and acorrespondingDHMAS are calculated using ascending climb gradient requirements. All DHMASvalues arecompared, and a controlling obstacle is determined as the obstacle having agreatest DHMAS.A decision altitude for the controlling obstacle is calculated, and the runwayapproachprocedure is updated with the decision altitude. Relativistic metadata otherobstacles can alsobe calculated and stored.
