The invention relates to the production of epoxidized methyl oleate from palm methyl oleate using in-situ epoxidation for preparation of plasticizers. Epoxidized palm-based methyl oleate (referred to as "EPMO") can be prepared by epoxidizing palm-based methyl oleate with an acid and peroxide. Epoxidation can be performed under controlled reaction conditions to provide EPMO having an iodine value in the range of 2 – 6 g I2/100 g. EPMO can be employed in plasticizer compositions, either alone or in combination with other plasticizers to substitute petroleum-based dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and the said EPMO is phthalate-free; which means that undesirable leakage of medical plastics has been mitigated.
