Disclosed are a method and device for configuring an OSPF area number. The method comprises: enabling a second network element device to access a network by means of a first network element device, wherein the first network element device is a device having accessed the network, the second network element device is a device newly accessing the network, and the first network element device and the second network element device are connected by means of a point-to-point link. The method comprises: receiving a first packet sent by the second network element device (20A); and sending a response message to the second network element device according to the first packet, wherein the response message comprises: an OSPF area number for connecting the first network element device with the second network element device (30A).
