Disclosed are an automobile (200) blind spot detection system and method provided with a microwave radar sensor (50) and ultrasonic sensors (10, 20, 30, 40), the system comprising one microwave radar sensor (50) arranged on the middle part of the tail end of an automobile (200) and a plurality of ultrasonic sensors (10, 20, 30, 40) symmetrically arranged at two sides of the automobile (200), wherein the detection zone of the microwave radar sensor (50) covers rear ends (BQ2L, BQ2R) of blind spots and some visible areas (SQL, SQR) behind the rear ends (BQ2L, BQ2R) of the blind spots of exterior rear-view mirrors of the automobile (200) adjacent to a lane; the detection zone of the plurality of ultrasonic sensors (10, 20, 30, 40) covers front ends (BQ1L, BQ1R) of the blind spots of the exterior rear-view mirrors of the automobile (200) adjacent to the lane; and the detection zones of the one microwave radar sensor (50) and the plurality of ultrasonic sensors (10, 20, 30, 40) wholly cover the blind spots (BQhL, BQhR) of the exterior rear-view mirrors of the automobile (200), extension areas of the rear ends of the blind spots and extension detection areas at the tail end of the automobile (200). The blind spot detection system and method has a better detection performance, thereby reducing the costs.
