REDUCTION OF RISK OF INJURY FROM ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES

The injuries inflicted on persons by anti-personnel mines are reduced or mitigated by using material having a density of at least 6 g/cm³ and, preferably, a density of at least 6 g/cm³ and a mass of at least 200 g, worn about the heel, ankle or lower leg of an individual. The invention also relates to the use of footwear comprising material having a density of at least 6 g/cm³ to mitigate the risk of injury, and protective footgear comprising a heel section adapted to fit around the heel of an item of footwear, and fastening means for attaching the footgear to said item of footwear, wherein the heel section itself comprises a base region formed from a material having a density of at least 6 g/cm³ and a mass of at least 200 g, and an upper region connected to the base region and supporting the fastening means.
