The calender rolls known in the prior art are edge-layer hardened, annealed at a lower temperature, and in particular tend to form indentations in the first months of use. As a result, said calender rolls have to be re-ground and possibly surface-finished again. The invention provides an improvement or an alternative to the prior art.
