A group-control-based automatic generation control (AGC) method for a power system, comprising: dividing power plant controllers (PLCs) within a control area into a plurality of groups, each group comprising a plurality of PLCs, the groups being set to have different adjustment priorities; when the power grid needs adjustment, considering the reserve adjustment power of a PLC that is executing a command, calculating the total adjustment power of the area; according to the total adjustment power of the area, the adjustment priorities of the PLC groups and the adjustment margin, selecting a PLC group for executing the adjustment; allocating, according to a corresponding adjustment principle, the total adjustment power of the area into the PLCs in the PLC group, and calculating the PLC target powers; and if the total adjustment power of the area is not completely allocated, selecting the next PLC group that has priority, and continuing the allocation until the allocation is completed. Said method is able to efficiently reduce the total adjustment times of the PLCs within a control area, improving the rationality and economy of AGC control.
