A method includes establishing a short range wireless communication channel (e.g., using Bluetooth® or the like) between a first device (e.g., a security monitoring device) and a mobile device (e.g., a smartphone) within a personal operating space of the first device, transmitting information relevant to manually orienting (e.g., positioning and directing) the first device substantially in real time (i.e., without deliberately introducing delay or substantial delay) or diagnosing the first device or the system, from the first device to the mobile device over the short range wireless communication channel, and presenting at least some of the transmitted information at the mobile device substantially in real time to facilitate effective manual orientation of the first device by a user or to facilitate diagnosing a system or device problem.
