The invention proposes a characterisation of an electrochemical device in operation for a prognosis of the future operation of the device, with in particular: * storage in memory (MEM), for a given type of device, of a plurality of models of the variation over time in at least one operating parameter of the device, as a function of respective operating points of the device; and * the implementation of a processor (PROC) that has access to this memory and that includes at least one connection to the device with a view to: - obtaining information relating to a current operating point of the device; - retrieving from the memory at least one variation model corresponding to the current operating point of the device; - receiving from the device at least one measurement of a current value of the operating parameter; - comparing said measurement to the variation model retrieved from the memory, in order to situate temporally the operation of the device; and, therefrom, - estimating an operating prognosis of the device.
