The method for matching a registration plate number comprises: acquiring a first registration plate number to be matched (101); acquiring a registration plate number library, the registration plate number library comprising at least one second registration plate number (102); based on the visual similarity of characters, calculating the difficulty of editing a character string required for conversion between each second registration plate number and the first registration plate number (103); and according to the difficulty of editing the character string, determining at least one second registration plate number matching the first registration plate number (104). The similarity between a second registration plate number and a first registration plate number can be rationally evaluated by means of the method, and even if there is a mistake with a registration plate number, a registration plate number identifying the same vehicle as same can still be successfully matched, thereby ensuring the validity and rationality of the monitoring function.
