The invention concerns a method for preparing a heterogeneous catalyst comprising copper and an element chosen from the group consisting of Ba, Ca, Na, K and the mixtures of same (element X) on a silica support, wherein the weight content of copper of the catalyst, defined as the total mass of the element copper in the catalyst to the mass of the catalyst, is between 0.5 and 30% by weight, and wherein the quantity of the element X is such that the molar ratio X/Cu is between 0.0001 and 0.045, and a method for producing carbonyls fed with a feedstock comprising at least one alcohol, carried out in the presence of the catalyst prepared according to the invention.
