It is proposed a method for operating a network element of an optical transport network, OTN; wherein a general communication channel employs a transmission of one or more pre-determined idle patterns at idle times of general communication channels; wherein the method comprises: receiving (602) data on the incoming general communication channel; determining a deterioration of the incoming general communication channel; and transmitting (606) a deterioration pattern at idle times on the outgoing general communication channel in dependence on the determination of the deterioration of the incoming general communication channel, wherein the deterioration pattern is different from the pre-determined idle pattern.
