In the present invention, provided are a compatible light emitting diode (LED) lamp which can be compatible with existing electronic and magnetic ballasts, and can efficiently turn on an LED by detecting appropriate power through detection of various signals, and a method for driving the same. The compatible LED lamp of the present invention comprises: a capacitor selecting unit connected to an output terminal of an electronic or magnetic ballast, and having a plurality of capacitors arranged in one of at least two connection relations to control a resonance gain; a rectifying and smoothing circuit unit connected to the capacitor selecting unit to rectify and smooth an output voltage; an LED matrix combination unit connected to the rectifying and smoothing circuit unit, and having a plurality of LEDs arranged in a serial or parallel connection relation; and a microcomputer unit for detecting a frequency of the output terminal of the ballast, and voltage and current of the LED matrix combination unit to change the connection relation of the capacitors and the connection relation of the LEDs.
