The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, alleviating or treating liver fibrosis or liver cirrhosis, which comprises an Aster tataricus Linne fil extract as an effective component, wherein the composition exhibits excellent hepatoprotective effects through increased apoptosis, collagen reduction, and ECM accumulation reduction in HSC-T6 cell lines and hepatic stellate cells. Additionally, the composition of the present invention exhibits excellent anti-fibroblastic effects by improving serum AST and ALT in an animal model of TAA-induced liver cirrhosis; restoring the total GSH level to a normal level; and down-regulating the expressions of TGF-, -SMA and Col1a2, which are genes related to hydroxyproline level reduction and liver fibrosis. Accordingly, the composition of the present invention may be beneficially used as an agent for improving liver functions or treating liver fibrosis or liver cirrhosis.
