The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating respiratory diseases containing a p-coumaric acid compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient. Infiltration of inflammatory cells on the periphery of bronchiole or expansion of alveolus can increase in lung tissues of mice exposed to cigarette smoke. However, irregular expansion of alveolus or infiltration of inflammatory cells can be alleviated when p-coumaric acid is orally taken prior to exposure to cigarette smoke.
