According to an embodiment of the present invention, provided is a check node processing unit implemented in a decoder for decoding a signal, which is configured to receive at least three input messages and to generate at least one output message. The check node processing unit comprises: a syndrome calculator (31) configured to determine, by each syndrome, one syndrome set from at least three input messages using at least two basic check node processors (311) including a symbol, a reliability metric associated with the symbol, a reliability metric associated with a binary symbol, and a binary vector; a de-correlating unit (33) configured to determine one candidate component set from the syndrome set in association with at least one output message, wherein each candidate component includes a symbol and a reliability metric related to the symbol, and the candidate set includes at least one pair of components including the same symbol; and a selection unit (35) configured to determine at least one output message by selecting components including distinct symbols from the candidate component set associated with at least one output message.
