The present invention relates to an EsHsp17.5 (Elymus sibiricus L. heat shock protein 17.5) protein or a gene encoding the same related to abiotic stress tolerance, and a method for enhancing abiotic stress tolerance using the same. The EsHsp17.5 gene of the present invention has an increased expression in various abiotic stress environments such as high temperature, saline, famine, or heavy metals. Therefore, the EsHsp17.5 gene can be used for molecular sowing of herbage and can be useful for the development of transformants having strong abiotic stress tolerance.
