The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, alleviating or treating cognitive impairments or neurodegenerative diseases, and/or to a composition for alleviating brain functions or cognitive functions, comprising Castanea crenata inner shell extracts or scopoletin isolated therefrom as an effective component. The Castanea crenata inner shell extracts of the present invention or scopoletin isolated therefrom show inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase activity; DPPH radical scavenging activity; nitrogen oxide inhibition; inhibitory activity on the expression of iNOS or COX-2 gene or protein; inhibitory activity on the expression of TNF-α, IL-6 or IL-1β gene; or blocking activity on the NF-κB signal transduction system, and thus are useful in the prevention, alleviation or treatment of cognitive impairments or neurodegenerative diseases, and have excellent effects in improving brain functions or cognitive functions.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2018
