Metallic matrix composites comprising inorganic particles and discontinuous fibers and methods for their preparation

A metal matrix composite comprising metal, inorganic particles, and discontinuous fibers is provided. The inorganic particles and the discontinuous fibers are dispersed in the metal. The metal includes aluminum, magnesium, or an alloy thereof. The inorganic particles have an envelope density that is 30% or more lower than the density of the metal. The metal matrix composite has a lower envelope density than the matrix metal while maintaining a substantial amount of mechanical properties of the metal.
