Quantum dot LEDs suitable for plant, algae and photosynthetic bacterial growth applications. The quantum dot LED utilizes a solid state LED (typically an LED emitting blue or UV light) as the primary light source and one or more quantum dot devices that downconvert the primary light source as the secondary light source. The emission profile of the quantum dot LED can be adjusted to correspond to the absorption spectrum of one or more photosynthetic pigments of the organism.
