A method and system are disclosed that can be automatically interface-connected to an Internet-based social network to securely provide location updates to a friend of a user on the move. In particular, a system and method for automatically posting user location information to a social network is provided. The system interface receives user data including a location update activation indicator and a location update condition. The navigation engine obtains information related to the location of the user on the move. The system's social network client module is adapted to determine that the location activation indicator is active and to determine that the location update condition is satisfied. The communication interface automatically posts a location update to the social network if the social network client determines that at least one location update condition is satisfied.
