Methods and systems are disclosed that are capable of automaticallyinterfacing withInternet-based social networks for safely providing friends of a mobile userwith locationupdates. In particular, a system and method are provided for automaticallyposting user-locationinformation to a social network. A system interface receives user dataincluding a locationupdate activation indicator and location update conditions. A navigationengine obtainsinformation associated with the current location of the mobile user. A socialnetwork clientmodule of the system is adapted to determine that the location activationindicator is active andto determine that a location update condition is met. A communicationsinterface automaticallyposts a location update to the social network if the social network clientdetermines that at leastone location update condition is met.
