Performing wireless transmissions that include portions of both the primary and secondary bands via an integrated air interface can provide improved throughput and frequency efficiency in next generation networks. Wireless transmissions, which include both license and license-exempt spectrum, carry data in different frame formats through each of the primary and secondary bands. For example, a frame delivered over the main band may have a different channel structure (e.g., different size, placement, orientation, etc.) from the frame delivered through the auxiliary band. Wireless transmissions, including license spectrum and license-exempt spectrum, may also utilize different access schemes and / or different waveforms through each of the primary and secondary bands. Embodiments of the integrated air interface may be dynamically configurable via software defined radio (SDR) signaling commands.
