The present invention relates to a smart display device for displaying an information area by an intuitive widget and an operating method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the smart display device includes: an information collection unit which collects environment information being sensed in a household and situation information, to which currently occurring events are reflected, in the environment information; a value information generation unit which generates one or more pieces of value information to be displayed based on the collected environment information and situation information; and a control unit which displays a first information area including one or more control items based on first setting information, operates a second information area based on a selection input on the control items, and controls a display unit to display one of the pieces of the value information generated in advance and the environment information on the second information area.
