According to the present invention, a method for producing high purity aluminum chloride powder from aluminum dross comprises: a step (a) of putting aluminum dross into a tube with a heater and heating the aluminum dross; a step (b) of introducing chlorine (Cl_2) gas into the tube and making the chlorine (Cl_2) gas react with the aluminum dross prepared in the step (a) to produce aluminum chloride (AlCl_3) gas; and a step (c) of cooling and pulverizing the aluminum chloride (AlCl_3) gas prepared in the step (b). Using the method for producing high purity aluminum chloride powder from aluminum dross of the present invention, it is possible to produce high purity aluminum chloride powder from discarded aluminum dross and thus, the discarded aluminum dross can be recycled, thereby reducing the cost of treating industrial wastes and providing an environmental protection effect due to minimization of the aluminum dross. Furthermore, a manufacturing cost of the aluminum chloride powder may be reduced such that it is possible to produce high purity aluminum chloride powder that is eco-friendly and has high added value in an economical manner. Additionally, it is possible to produce high purity α-alumina by heat treating the high purity aluminum chloride powder produced according to the present invention.
